The Primary Goal of Manufacturing: Productivity Gains
If you are a narrow width strip fabricator, can you afford NOT to consider the value of oscillate-wound coils versus ribbon wound coils?
Many of our ribbon wound customers have successfully converted production lines to accommodate oscillate-wound coils. Significant productivity gains have been realized due to longer run time and less down time caused by coil changeover. Traditional ribbon wound coils must be changed frequently throughout the day. Each coil changeover can cost between $100.00 or greater per hour.

Monthly consumption = 40,000 lbs.
Average ribbon wound coil size: 200 lbs. (400 PIW)
200 ribbon wound coils per month (40,000 lbs. / 200 lbs. = 200)
Each coil takes 15 minutes to change over at $100.00 per hour = $25.00 per coil changeover
$25.00 x 200 ribbon wound coils = $5,000.00 per month ($0.125 per lb.)
Conversely, each oscillate-wound coil would cost approximately = $500.00 per month ($0.0125 per lb.)
Total cost savings using oscillate-wound coils = $4,500.00
A modest oscillate-wound coil weighing 2000 lbs. would contain ten ribbon wound coils. Equipment upgrades to accommodate oscillate-wound coils may be needed. However, the investment is quickly recovered due to less downtime and less material waste associated with frequent coil changes.
